The shares of Macmahon Holdings Ltd have been placed in a trading halt as the engineering firm enters the final negotiations for a contract.

Macmahon shares will remain in the trading halt until the start of trading on March 12, or when a statement is released to the market, according to a statement from the Australian Securities Exchange on Wednesday.

"The company is in final negotiations in respect of a contract," Macmahon said in the statement.
